If I Drive a Mercedes. Am I a Narcissist?
Short Answer. Probably.
I remember sitting in a portable in my high school sociology class, learning about Freud, amongst other things — you know the fun fact that only psychopaths hang toilet paper in the under position. This is where I learned that driving a bigger car or truck was apparently a sign of an insecure person. Now studies are showing us the same is true for that luxury car driver.
That Mercedes driver racing past you is probably a narcissist, or at least has some deep laden insecurities according to a number of studies.
First of all, what does it mean to be a Narcissist?
According to Psychology Today, narcissism is “a hunger for appreciation or admiration, a desire to be the center of attention, and an expectation of special treatment reflecting perceived higher status.”
Going a step farther, according to the Mayo Clinic someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a condition in which “people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.”
People with NPD are extremely fragile to any criticisms, anything that could crack that shiny, perfect demeanor.
